Context
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) is committed to strengthening transparency, accountability, and staff engagement through effective internal communication. With more than 16,000 staff worldwide, IOM requires consistent, timely, and accessible communication across Headquarters, Regional, and Country Offices.
Under the direct supervision of the Head of Internal Communications, the Communications Officer (Internal Communications) will be responsible for supervising, coordinating and implementing specific internal communications activities, and serving as a point of contact for HQ, Regional and Country Office staff.
Contribute technical inputs for the elaboration of IOM's internal communication strategy, in alignment with the Organizationโs mission, values, and strategic objectives, and assist in its implementation.Compile, review, and perform preliminary editing of internal communications content across intranet, all-staff emails, newsletters, and leadership updates using tiered content & templates.Draft plain-language summaries, FAQs, and quick-reference materials from complex policy/operational updates and sensitive content.Coordinate the production of materials for the Leadership Team, and provide guidance on clear and consistent tone and messaging.Support crisis communications during emergencies and emerging crises by compiling, suggesting edits, and disseminating sensitive information in close coordination with DMCโs strategic communications and policy unit.Act as an internal communications focal point in Geneva, liaising closely with other departments in HQ as well as internal communications focal points in the field (ROs and COs).Liaise with the multimedia unit and other relevant stakeholders to help develop creative content that supports the internal communications strategy.Serve as the first point of contact for staff inquiries about internal communications tools, platforms, and protocols.Facilitate two-way communication between staff and leadership via channels such as pulse polls, staff input mechanisms, sentiment clustering, you said/we did follow-ups, etc.Consolidate feedback on policies and other issues for the Head of Internal Communications.Provide specific training sessions to staff across the Organization on effective internal communication practices, including the use of accessible digital tools and platforms.Update internal communications channels, including the IOM intranet, newsletters, mailing lists, and other collaboration platforms, in a timely manner.Make technical recommendations to support ongoing improvements to internal communications platforms (e.g., intranet redesign, AI tools).Troubleshoot technical/content issues, escalating to IT or external vendors as needed.Organize and coordinate logistics for staff engagement activities and internal communications events in Geneva, including town hall meetings, staff briefings, feedback sessions and campaign rollouts.Facilitate inclusivity and accessibility of staff communications (e.g., disability inclusion, translation requests, captioning).Monitor engagement with newsletters, intranet posts, and other channels via a monthly internal communications scorecard.Collect and synthesize staff feedback on communications effectiveness for reporting to the Head of Internal Communications.Suggest improvements based on data and user feedback.Perform such other tasks as may be assigned.Education
Masterโs degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, or related field with two years of relevant professional experience; or,Bachelorโs degree in the above fields with four years of relevant professional experience.Accredited Universities are those listed in theย UNESCO World Higher Education Database.
Experience
Experience drafting and editing content for internal audiences in large organizations; and,Experience working in an international or multicultural environment is desirable.Skills
Exposure to intranet or digital content management systems (e.g., SharePoint, Drupal);Familiarity with event organization, newsletter production, or digital employee engagement tools;Strong writing and editing skills with attention to clarity, tone, and copy-editing;Ability to manage multiple tasks under tight deadlines;ย Good interpersonal skills and ability to liaise effectively with diverse stakeholders; and,Proficiency in Microsoft Office, intranet platforms, and digital communication tools.Languages
IOMโs official languages are English, French and Spanish.ย All staff members are required to be fluent in one of the the three languages.
For this position, fluency in English is required (oral and written). Working knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, and Spanish) is an advantage.
