Mission and objectivesSince Governments have the primary responsibility to protect human rights, the High Commissioner for Human Rights and her Office (Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights โ OHCHR) provide assistance to Governments so they can implement the international human rights standards they've committed to. This assistance includes expertise and technical trainings in the areas of administration of justice, legislative reform, and electoral processes. We also assist other entities with responsibility to protect human rights to fulfil their obligations and individuals to realize their rights. We support the establishment and strengthening of National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs), and collaborate with them to implement their mandates to promote and protect human rights. We also work closely with civil society actors to build their knowledge of human rights and promote their participation in UN decision-making processes. As the principal United Nations office mandated to promote and protect human rights for all, UN Human Rights: Works with and assists Governments in fulfilling their human rights obligations Speaks out objectively in the face of human rights violations worldwide Provides a forum for identifying, highlighting and developing responses to today's human rights challenges Acts as the principal focal point of human rights research, education, public information, and advocacy activities Works with a wide range of partners in order to widen the constituency for human rights worldwide.
ContextThe Regional Office for West Africa of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR/WARO) is the principal United Nations agency responsible for the protection and promotion of human rights in West Africa. Operational since September 2008, the Office is based in Dakar, Senegal. OHCHR headquarters are in Geneva, Switzerland. It is part of the United Nations Secretariat. As part of its mandate WARO works on Early warning, prevention & protection of human rights in situations of conflict & insecurity, through its Early Response Team, which collects and analyses information for prevention purposes. The OV will work closely with the ERT IMO on a daily basis to collect information pertaining to the human rights situation in specific West African countries. This monitoring of online press and social media should allow the OV to store the information in a dedicated database following a tagging system (based on the Risk Framework).
Task DescriptionFor the collection of data on human rights, including in the context of elections in the West African region, we seek support from one Online Volunteer, who under the guidance of the OHCHR WARO Information management Officer within the early response team, will: - Conduct online data collection using defined methodology and tools from selected sources - Support the preparation of the Daily Media monitoring online in some countries and targeting the articles in SeaTable - Conduct social media monitoring regarding hate speech in the context of the upcoming elections in Cรดte dโIvoire within the region or other relevant events - Create/prepare short reports capturing findings The Online Volunteer will have the opportunity to build connections with the West Africa Regional Office and the Emergency Response Team at OHCHR and learn about the ways in which data can support human rights protection, in particular during elections.
