Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking a communication and events intern to join our Development and Outreach Department in Copenhagen. Ideally, the candidate will be available for 20 to 37 hours per week, depending on the associated ECTS-credits from the academic institution. Starting in September 2024, the duration of the internship will be 20 weeks, lasting until the end of January 2025. The Internship is unpaid, and interns must be enrolled as a student for the duration of their internship term.

This internship is best suited for individuals interested in gaining experience working in a smaller office of a large international non-profit organization. The intern will gain experience and skills from a broad range of human rights activities, including communication, event management, fundraising, and outreach. The internship offers flexibility and provides a comprehensive introduction to working in an international human rights organization. HRW interns have unique opportunities to attend lectures, trainings, professional development workshops, and special events relating to human rights, as well as network with other HRW interns, volunteers, and employees. As an HRW intern, you will get a chance to take skills acquired during your studies and apply them to a professional setting. Other projects may be assigned as they arise and match the intern’s interests and abilities.

Qualifications: Interns must be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program for the duration of the internship. Excellent communications skills in English and Danish are essential, and applicants enrolled in communications or human rights programs are encouraged to apply. Applicants pursuing professional bachelor programs may also be considered. Applicants should be well-organized, self-motivated, creative, flexible, and detail- oriented with excellent time management skills. Experience with collaborating within a team is desirable. Experience with creating content for social media is highly desirable. Familiarity with MS Office programs (Word and Excel) and graphical software editing programs (the Adobe package) is desirable. The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated interest in communication, event management, fundraising, and human rights.

Applicants who are offered an internship must possess valid work authorization in Denmark for the duration of the internship.

The internship is unpaid. Interns must be enrolled students for the duration of their internship term. The internship must be a part of their school program, to ensure that they receive funding from the government. Students may be able to arrange academic credit, as Human Rights Watch internships often offer direct exposure to the workings of an international human rights organization, close supervision by HRW staff, and interaction with other Copenhagen based and international organizations alike. Students should check with their individual academic institutions for requirements.
