Organizational Setting

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) supports the 2030 Agenda through its Strategic Framework, promoting efficient, inclusive, resilient, and sustainable agrifood systems for better production, nutrition, environment, and life, leaving no one behind.

FAO Country Offices, guided by the Strategic Framework, provide policy advice, technical assistance, and core services to countries in FAO’s mandated areas. These offices implement country-specific priorities outlined in their Country Programming Frameworks (CPFs) and aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF), ensuring efficient operations with adequate human and financial resources.

FAO Ethiopia country office in close collaboration with Ministries of Agriculture (MoA) and other relevant government institutions implement various interventions aimed at promoting sustainable food systems, providing related technical assistance and policy advice, enhancing access to knowledge and technology, promoting seed systems and genetic resources and supporting appropriate and timely response to food security challenges and emergencies.

The various assignments are based at the FAO Subregional Office for Eastern Africa and Representation in Ethiopia in Addis Ababa, as well as in sub-offices located across the country, including Mekelle, Bahir Dar, Semera, Jijiga, Gambella, and Hawassa.
The purpose of this call is to establish a roster of experienced drivers who can be engaged for short-term and long-term assignments as operational needs arise in various locations.

Reporting Lines

Under the overall guidance of the FAO Representative in Ethiopia (FAOR) and Subregional Coordinator for Eastern Africa (SFE SRC), the overall supervision of the International Administrative Officer, direct supervision of the Business Support Officer or the assigned Field Office Coordinator and close collaboration with the Senior Driver, the incumbent will carry out the following duties:

Technical Focus

Provide transportation/messenger services to Office Staff. He / she ensures the safety, technical soundness and comfort of the vehicle(s) assigned.

Tasks and Responsibilities

•     Drive official vehicles to transport FAO personnel and other authorized personnel, as authorized.
•     Deliver and collect mail, documents, pouch and other communications / items from and to the FAO office, as authorized; go to the post office, airport, government agencies, other UN agencies, institutions, project sites, etc. to take and deliver items and communications; keep records as required.
•     Maintain assigned vehicle daily - check oil, water, battery, tyres, etc.; perform minor repairs and timely arrange for any other repairs necessary to keep the vehicle in a good running condition at all times; keep the vehicle interior and exterior clean.
•     Keep the assigned vehicle secured and safe, park in safe and secured locations at all times.
•     Make sure that all necessary tools and equipment (i.e. tools kit, fire extinguisher, first aid medical kit, VHF mobile radio, etc.) are in vehicle, operational and properly safeguarded.
•     Follow all UNDSS guidelines for vehicle tracking and safe driving during field missions; regularly make radio contact with UNDSS, follow travel routes approved on security clearance, etc.
•     Record movement of assigned vehicle; log trips, daily mileage, fuel issued, etc., in vehicle logbook; record transportation / vehicle related expenditures, vehicle servicing, repairs, etc.
•     Meet FAO personnel or other authorized personnel at the airport and assist through immigration, customs formalities, hotel check-in, and other local formalities, as may be required.
•     Prepare written report of vehicle accidents and follow local procedures for reporting accidents and any other incidents.
•     Deliver and collect goods to and from the port of exit/entry and this may involve handling all the formalities for customs clearance.
•     Serve as Duty Driver when assigned.
•     When needed, assist the FAO office staff in performing simple clerical duties such as making and answering telephone calls, making photocopies, etc.
•     Perform other related duties as required.

CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING

Minimum Requirements

•     Completed Secondary Education (High School Diploma or Equivalent).
•     Be in possession of valid 3 grade Ethiopian driver’s license.
•     Three (3) years of work experience as a driver; experience in a UN or international organization is an advantage. Having a flawless, safe driving record is an asset.
•     Working knowledge (level C) of English and good knowledge of the local language(s) used at the duty station. 
•     National of Ethiopia.
