Organizational Setting
The Agrifood Economics and Policy Division (ESA) conducts economic research and policy analysis to support the transformation to more efficient, inclusive, resilient and sustainable agrifood systems for better production, better nutrition, a better environment, and a better life, leaving no one behind. ESA provides evidence-based support to national, regional and global policy processes and initiatives related to monitoring and analysing food and agricultural policies, agribusiness and value chain development, rural transformation and poverty, food security and nutrition information and analysis, resilience, bioeconomy, and climate-smart agriculture. The division also leads the production of two FAO flagship publications: The State of Food and Agriculture (SOFA) and The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World (SOFI) and provides core technical support for the FAO Global Roadmap.
Reporting Lines
Selected candidates will be assigned to different workstreams of the division and to different supervisors. The overall supervision remains with the Director, ESA.ย
Technical Focusย
The Economist will specialize in integrating risk analysis, econometric modelling, and impact evaluations and the study of agrifood system resilience. This role calls for a strong quantitative and analytical abilities to propel innovative economic research, policy formulation, and impact assessment design. The incumbent will be expected to contribute to the design and implementation of experimental and quasi-experimental studies โ including Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs), Discrete Choice Experiments (DCEs), and Lab-in-the-Field (LIF) methods โ to assess behavioural responses, adoption of technologies, and programme effectiveness in agrifood systems. In developing countries, the incumbent will be tasked with complex economic situations, applying state-of-the-art econometric techniques and models, leveraging on different data sources (surveys, remote-sensing, big data, and machine-learning derived) to illuminate trends, risks, and opportunities present within the agrifood sector, with particular attention to smallholder resilience and food security.ย
Tasks and responsibilities
Using econometric, experimental methods, and modelling tools, the Economist will analyse issues related to risk, resilience, food security and nutrition within agrifood systems in developing countries. The objective of this role is to inform and shape policies that strengthen the resilience of agrifood systems, ultimately enhancing food security and nutrition.
