5 Steps to get a job in the United Nations

Mission and objectivesThe fundamental mission of UNICEF is to promote the rights of every child, everywhere, in everything the organization does โ€” in programmes, in advocacy and in operations. The equity strategy, emphasizing the most disadvantaged and excluded children and families, translates this commitment to childrenโ€™s rights into action. For UNICEF, equity means that all children have an opportunity to survive, develop and reach their full potential, without discrimination, bias, or favouritism. To the degree that any child has an unequal chance in life โ€” in its social, political, economic, civic, and cultural dimensions โ€” her or his rights are violated. There is growing evidence that investing in the health, education and protection of a societyโ€™s most disadvantaged citizens โ€” addressing inequity โ€” not only will give all children the opportunity to fulfil their potential but also will lead to sustained growth and stability of countries. Therefore, the focus on equity is so vital. It accelerates progress towards realizing the human rights of all children, which is the universal mandate of UNICEF, as outlined by the Convention on the Rights of the Child, while also supporting the equitable development of nations.

Living conditions and remarksPapua New Guinea is one of the worldโ€™s most diverse countries in terms of biodiversity, ethnicity, and linguistics (over 850 languages are spoken). An estimated 11 million people are dispersed and scattered over a landmass of 452,860 km2 (population density is about 15 people per km2), including the eastern half of New Guinea Island, the New Britain, New Ireland and Bougainville islands and over 600 smaller islands, 27 per cent of which are inhabited. Such a diverse, segmented society is like that in other Melanesian countries. PNGโ€™s capital, Port Moresby, lies on the Southern side of the Owen Stanley Ranges which dissects the eastern half of the island of New Guinea. The city was founded on Fairfax harbor and to the present day, is not connected to any other major town or region in PNG by road. The city falls within the National Capital District (NCD) and is home to approximately 300,000 residents. The main commercial centers are: Town (or Port Moresby), Gordons and Boroko. The UNICEF Office is in Port Moresby. Government departments and foreign missions are predominantly located in Waigani. PNG is a family duty station. There are shopping malls, supermarkets, restaurants, craft markets, UNDSS approved hotels and island resorts. Different types of long-term accommodation are available in Port Moresby. There are apartments in gated compounds with security fence and guards. These could be furnished and/or fully serviced, or unfurnished. Rental prices are high in Port Moresby often quoted per week. There are UN staff staying long-term in a one-bedroom unit with living room and kitchen fully serviced in the hotels. Most of the UN staff reside in the same apartment complex. Most of international staffโ€™s children attend international schools with an academic system that is widely recognized abroad. Some international schools include a kindergarten and pre-school classes for younger kids. Work opportunities for spouses/partners are limited. They are not allowed to work unless they hired by any organization and have a work permit. While the Security Level in Port Moresby is classified as Moderate (Level 3) as per the UN security management system in PNG, with bag snatching, robberies, carjacking, and tribal fights which are common in the capital, these can be avoided by adherence to UN security precautions and avoiding criminal hot spot locations.
