Result of ServiceThe incumbent will be responsible for the following: - Identification of 30 schools in Lebanon to participate in the SDG Stories Phase V. - Establishing networks between private and public schools to undertake joint activities and development projects. - Field visits to beneficiary schools conducted by a joint team from ESCWA and the national focal point in Lebanon. - Successful organization of highlight events related to the SDG Stories Initiative in Lebanon. - Working with municipalities to mainstream SDGs through training sessions and practical projects. Work LocationLebanon Expected duration6 months Duties and ResponsibilitiesBackground The SDG Stories Team was established by ESCWAโ€™s Executive Secretary to engage young persons aged 7 to 16, across the Arab region, with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) using storytelling. This is achieved primarily through the development and dissemination of a comic book, the โ€œESCWA Storiesโ€, that presents engaging stories centered on the SDGs. The Lebanese National Commission for UNESCO is a national body that liaises between the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as well as the Arab League Educational Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO) and the Anna Lindh Euro-Mediterranean Foundation for the Dialogue between Cultures (ALF) on one side, and the Lebanese government and civil society on the other side, in the areas of education, science, culture, communication and information. In this capacity, the Lebanese National Commission for UNESCO and its Associated Schools Network is a link between ESCWA and Lebanese schools. Against this background, the SDG Stories Team is seeking the services of a designated focal point and focal point assistant from UNESCOโ€™s Lebanese National Commission to support and facilitate the work of the SDG Stories Team. Duties and responsibilities The Focal Point Assistant is expected to provide operational and logistical support to the appointed focal point in Lebanon in the following duties: - Acting as focal point between ESCWA, the Lebanese National Commission for UNESCO and the designated beneficiary schools in Lebanon, in support of the โ€œSDG Storiesโ€ Initiative. - Identifying 30 target schools to take part in the SDG Stories Initiative for the academic year 2025-26, through UNESCO and ALECSOโ€™s Associated Schools Network in Lebanon. - Advising schools and national authorities and stakeholders in Lebanon on the adoption and implementation of activities related to the SDGs. - Facilitating the flow of information between ESCWA and the designated beneficiary schools in Lebanon. - Participating with the SDG Stories Team in their field visits to beneficiary schools in Lebanon. - Assisting the SDG Stories Team in the planning and organization of events relevant to the initiative, including capacity building sessions for teachers. - Exchanging expertise with the SDG Stories Team and facilitating cooperation and partnership. - Contributing to the promotion of the SDGs, intergenerational dialogue, good citizenship and global leadership among teachers, staff and students participating in the SDG Stories Initiative. Qualifications/special skillsA recognized first level degree in education, sociology, psychology, social service, international relations, political science or related area is required. All candidates must submit a copy of the required educational degree. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed. A minimum of 5 years of professional work experience with NGOs, local governments and international organizations, on projects related to education, science and culture is required. A current relevant position at the Lebanese National Commission for UNESCO is required. Experience working with public and private schools in Lebanon is desirable. Other relevant UN experience is desirable. LanguagesEnglish and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat; and Arabic is a working language of ESCWA. For this position, fluency in Arabic is required.
