Org. Setting and ReportingThe Independent Institution on Missing Persons in the Syrian Arab Republic (IIMP) was established by the General Assembly in its resolution 77/301, adopted on 29 June 2023. Please note that while the position is currently located in Geneva, Switzerland, the duty station may be subject to change. Applicants should be aware that the position may be relocated to Damascus, Syria, or to another location relevant to the Institutionโ€™s operations. The incumbent reports to the Head of Entity, or his/her designee, in the Executive Office. ResponsibilitiesWithin delegated authority and depending on location, the Public Information Officer may be responsible for the following duties: โ€ข Supports media relations for the Independent Institution through organizing media interviews, preparing talking points and devising communications plans for high-level missions, among other activities. โ€ข Takes the lead in strategy, planning, development and implementation of the social media strategy, and evaluates results and impact of social media activities, reports on developments, trends and attitudes regarding the Independent Institution. โ€ข Ensures implementation of information programs to publicize priority issues and/or major events, to include drafting information strategies, coordinating efforts, monitoring and reporting on progress, taking appropriate follow-up action, and analyzing the outcome. โ€ข Monitors and analyzes current events, public opinion and press, identifies issues and trends, and advises management on appropriate action/responses. โ€ข Undertakes activities to promote media coverage (e.g. press conferences, interviews, press seminars and other special activities) of priority issues and/or major events, to include development of a media strategy and action plan, initiating pro-active media outreach efforts, proposing and arranging press conferences/media coverage, disseminating materials and consulting with press on approach/story angle and other information requests, undertaking appropriate follow-up action and analyzing and reporting on the impact of coverage. โ€ข Produces or oversees production of a specific type or types (e.g. print, broadcast, etc.) of information communications products (e.g. press kits, press releases, feature articles, speeches, booklets, brochures, backgrounders, audio-visual materials, radio spot program, etc.), to include proposing topics, undertaking research, determining appropriate medium and target audience, preparing production plans, writing drafts, obtaining clearances and finalizing texts, editing copy, and coordinating design approval, printing procedures and distribution. โ€ข Prepares, on the basis of official UN documentation and other sources, initial drafts of articles or chapters for inclusion in UN newsletters, periodicals, reports and books. โ€ข Initiates and sustains professional relationships with key constituencies. โ€ข Acts as focal point on specific issues, monitoring and reporting on developments, responding to inquiries, etc. โ€ข Participates in selecting the information transmitted to key constituencies. โ€ข Provides guidance to, and may supervise, more junior staff. โ€ข Collects and analyzes data to identify trends or patterns and provide insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods to enable data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting. Work ExperienceA minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in public information, journalism, international relations, public administration or related area is required. Experience managing social media accounts for a large global organization is required. Experience in engaging with the media and writing on human rights or humanitarian crises is desirable. Experience with maintaining and editing content of websites is desirable. LanguagesEnglish and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this job opening, English and Arabic are required.
