Result of ServiceThrough these services the Initiative will be able to engage a broad range of financial institutions, including commercial banks, asset managers, insurers, and multi-lateral development banks and agencies in implementing global finance sector principles to catalyze integration of sustainability into financial market practice. The frameworks UNEP FI is supporting implementation include Principles for Responsible Banking (PRB) now committed to by more than 300 banks collectively holding USD 53 trillion in assets, or one third of the global banking sector, and the Principles for Sustainable Insurance (PSI), established 2012 by UNEP FI and today applied by one-quarter of the worldโ€™s insurers (25% of world premium). The services will also help promote sustainability into all aspects of the financial sectorโ€™s operations and services. Finally, the services will help the Initiative to broaden its outreach both within UNEP / UN and external to banks, insurers and investors, governments, regulators, private sector and multi-stakeholders, including supporting institutions. Work LocationWorking remotely Expected duration7 months Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The overall objective of the UNEPโ€™s Industry and Economy Division is to encourage decision makers in government, local authorities and industry to develop and adopt policies, strategies and practices and technologies that promote sustainable patterns of consumption and production, make efficient use of natural resources, ensure safe management of chemicals and contribute to making trade and environment policies mutually supportive. It promotes the development, use and transfer of policies, technologies, economic instruments, managerial practices and other tools that assist in environmentally sound decision making and the building of corresponding activities. The United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) is the strategic partnership between the United Nations and over 500 banks, insurers and investors. For over 32 years UNEP FI has been shaping and driving the international sustainable finance agenda, setting global standards and growing a global network of leading financial institutions. Through its work-streams and regional activities, peer learning, methodology development, training and research, UNEP FI promotes sustainable finance and helps the financial industry align with and contribute to the Paris Agreement and Sustainable Development Goals. UNEP FI needs a consultant to develop, implement and manage the communications strategy for the UNEP FI insurance global work programme, made up of the PSI, V20-Sustainable Insurance Facility (SIF) and FIT global work programmes. and currently does not have the relevant professional expertise internally. Objectives: Under the direction and supervision of the UNEP FI Communications Deputy Lead, the Consultant will develop, implement and manage the communications strategy for the UNEP FI insurance global work programme, made up of the PSI, V20-Sustainable Insurance Facility (SIF) and FIT global work programmes. In doing so, the Consultant will liaise with the wider UNEP FI insurance team, particularly the Head of Insurance (who is the PSI Programme Leader & FIT Chair), the Net-Zero Insurance Project Coordinator, Net-Zero Insurance Project Manager, the FIT legal team and other FIT roles in the future, the PSI Programme Coordinator, PSI Programme Implementation Manager, PSI Africa Implementation Officer, PSI Nature Project Manager, members of the V20 SIF Project Office hosted by the PSI, FIT organizations and PSI members. The Consultant will also liaise with members of the UNEP FI Communications Team and UNEP colleagues managing communications, the UNEP FI Membership & Regional Coordination Manager, and UNEP FI regional and country coordinators, and partners and key stakeholders such as the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), UNDP Sustainable Insurance Forum (SIF), Vulnerable Twenty Group of Finance Ministers (V20), Munich Climate Insurance Initiative (MCII), Global Shield against Climate Risks, and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation & Development (BMZ). Specific tasks and responsibilities: The consultant will aid in the following project/tasks for UNEP FIโ€™s communications work: โ€ข Lead the internal (member) and external communications for the PSI and FIT as part of the UNEP FI Communications Team, in coordination with the UNEP FI Insurance Team. โ€ข Ensure consistent insurance messaging within broader UNEP FI communications, in coordination with the other members of the UNEP FI Communications Team and Regional Teams. โ€ข Develop and implement communications strategies and plans for UNEP FI insurance projects and initiatives with clear objectives, messaging and transmission channels for each target audience. โ€ข Liaise with the FIT legal team on all FIT external communications to ensure compliance with applicable laws, rules and regulations โ€ข Ensure that the FIT and PSI communications strategies are aligned and linked to the wider UNEP FI communications strategy and work programmes. โ€ข Develop and coordinate content for websites, social media, and FIT and PSI communications materials to build internal and external visibility and increase interest among key stakeholder groups โ€ข Ensure coordination with external partners such as GFANZ, SBTi, UNDP-SIF, V20, MCII, Global Shield against Climate Risks, and BMZ, in promoting the UNEP FI insurance work programme. โ€ข Support the communications departments of FIT organizations and PSI members in promoting the work of the PSI and FIT, through the development of communications packs for major announcements and by convening regular meetings focused on communications updates. โ€ข Ensure that all external communications are coordinated in terms of delivery and have a common branding and style โ€ข Write and distribute member communications and e-mail campaigns, including monthly PSI and FIT Member Updates โ€ข Develop media strategies for UNEP FIโ€™s insurance work programme in line with UNEP FIโ€™s overall media strategy and support team members with press engagement, maintaining a high-quality media database and media monitoring reports as needed โ€ข Strengthen existing communications products, with a specific focus on messaging for key stakeholder groups (e.g. financial institutions, donors, governments, NGOs) โ€ข Provide editorial support, including copy editing and proofreading as needed Outputs and Deliverables: โ€ข Analytics of communications channels indicate increase and show high level of engagement (e.g. social media, website) โ€ข Communications campaigns show high level of engagement by external stakeholders (e.g. downloads of research and guidance) โ€ข Communications coordinated with FIT/PSI/UNEP FI Secretariat and other UNEP and UN colleagues โ€ข Communications amplified by FIT organizations and PSI members and key stakeholders and communities of communications colleagues convened regularly โ€ข Website content updated โ€ข Multiple channels used to engage segmented target audience โ€ข Communications plan aligned with FIT/PSI/UNEP FI strategy and work programme โ€ข Core materials developed and updated (e.g. pitch deck, membersโ€™ handbook, brochure) โ€ข PSI Member Updates delivered, and readership increased The consultant shall be under the overall supervision of the Head UNEP FI. The consultant will report to the UNEP FI Communications Co-Leads. Qualifications/special skillsEducation: A bachelorโ€™s degree in communications, journalism, marketing, public/media relations, design, risk management, insurance, finance, business, environment, sustainable development, international relations or related fields. An advanced university degree in combination with three (3) years of work experience may be accepted in lieu of the first level university degree. Professional Experience: At least five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in communications or marketing, ideally in relation to the insurance industry and the wider financial sector (banking, investment), climate change and other sustainability issues. Up-to-date proficiency with communications best practices, including social media, is required. Proven knowledge and expertise in developing, implementing and managing communications strategies. Proven excellent writing and editing skills. Creative and resourceful strategist with a track record of proactivity. LanguagesLanguages: English is the working language of UNEP FI. Knowledge of other United Nations languages is an asset. Additional InformationSkills & Knowledge: Excellent oral and written communications skills in English, strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with digital technology; ability to cope with juggling multiple tasks across diverse projects in an organized and timely manner; attention to detail. Knowledge of social media and virtual communications channels is desirable, as is experience of writing copy for social media, online articles and press releases. The consultant is expected to work collaboratively with communications and programme colleagues to implement communications strategies and work plans. The consultant should have the ability to establish and maintain good working relations in a multicultural and geographically dispersed team working across functions. A hands-on, pragmatic approach is desirable. Past experience in communications within the insurance sector is desirable.
