Duration: 11 months1. Background and Context
In partnership with the Government of Zimbabwe, the World Food Programme (WFP) Zimbabwe continues to play a catalytic role in addressing the countryโs most pressing development challenges ranging from food insecurity and climate shocks to economic volatility and youth unemployment. These challenges directly impact the four dimensions of food security: availability, access, utilization, and stability all of which are central to WFPโs mission and Zimbabweโs development agenda.
Through its work in resilience building, nutrition, and emergency response, WFP supports national efforts aligned with the National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1) and the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
To deepen stakeholder engagement, enhance visibility, and mobilize resources and leverage on strategic partnerships and WFP Zimbabwe is launching a high-level podcast series that will serve as a platform for strategic storytelling, advocacy, and influence. This initiative is designed to:
- Amplify authentic voices from across Zimbabweโs development ecosystem, including private sector leaders, youth entrepreneurs, farmers, and national champions.
- Showcase transformative solutions, from climate-smart agriculture to scalable public-private partnerships.
- Engage global audiences, including international financial institutions (IFIs), private sector actors, development partners, and diaspora communities, by offering compelling narratives that reflect Zimbabweโs resilience and potential.
- Position Zimbabwe as a space of opportunity, innovation, and transformation, while reinforcing WFPโs mission to achieve Zero Hunger through inclusive, locally led solutions.
Strategic Podcast Objectives
- Advance WFPโs Strategic Vision: Position the podcast as a dynamic platform to communicate WFP Zimbabweโs contribution to national development priorities, humanitarian response, and long-term resilience, in alignment with the Government of Zimbabwe and global frameworks such as the SDGs.
- Catalyse Investment and Partnerships: Elevate Zimbabweโs development narrative to attract catalytic funding, foster innovative partnerships, and engage influential stakeholders across the private sector, international financial institutions (IFIs), and the diaspora.
- Shape Global Discourse and Influence Policy: Foster cross-sectoral dialogue and thought leadership by spotlighting local solutions, amplifying community voices, and connecting Zimbabweโs food systems transformation to global policy conversations on food security, climate action, and inclusive growth.
2. Purpose of the Assignment
The purpose of this consultancy is to provide technical and creative expertise for the end-to-end production of a high-quality podcast series hosted by the WFP Country Director. The consultant will be responsible for conceptualization, content development, recording, editing, and post-production of both audio and visual formats, ensuring alignment with WFPโs communication standards and advocacy objectives.
3. Scope of Work
Under the supervision of the Head of External Relations, the consultant will perform the following tasks:
3.1 Podcast Strategy and Conceptualization
- Collaborate with WFP External Relations teams to define podcast format, tone, and target audience.
- Develop an editorial calendar for 13 episodes over three months.
- Advise on branding elements including podcast name, intro/outro music, and visual identity.
3.2 Content Development and Scripting
- Research topics aligned with WFPโs priorities and advocacy themes.
- Draft episode outlines, interview questions, and scripts/talking points.
- Conduct pre-interviews with guests where feasible.
3.3 Recording and Production
- Co-Manage technical setup for audio and video recording.
- Advise in collaboration with the head of Head of external relations direction to the Country Director and guests to ensure engaging delivery.
3.4 Post-Production and Editing
- Support the editing of audio and video for clarity, flow, and quality.
- Support the Integration music, sound effects, and branding elements.
3.5 Launch and Distribution Support
- Recommend hosting platforms and assist with initial setup.
- Draft show notes, episode descriptions, and SEO-optimized titles.
- Advise on promotional strategies across WFP digital channels.
3.6 Quality Assurance
- Support the External Relations unit to ensure compliance with WFP branding, communication, and advocacy standards.
- Conduct quality checks prior to final delivery.
4. Deliverables
- Inception Report: Podcast strategy and editorial calendar.
- 13 Produced Episodes: Audio and visual formats, 60 minutes each.
- Ancillary Materials: Transcripts, show notes, titles, timestamps, hashtags.
- Technical Recommendations: Best practices for future podcast production.
- Final Report: Summary of activities, challenges, and recommendations.
5. Reporting Lines
The consultant will report to the Head of External Relations.
6. Duration and Location
- Duration: 11 months from contract signature.
- Location: Harare, Zimbabwe. Consultant must reside in Harare and have access to reliable internet.
7. Qualifications and Experience
Education
- Bachelorโs degree in communications, Journalism, Media Production, Marketing, or related field. Masterโs degree is an asset.
Experience
- Minimum 5 years in podcast, radio, or TV production.
- Proven track record in audio storytelling and content creation.
- Experience with international organizations or humanitarian work is desirable.
Skills
- Strong interviewing, research, and editorial skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
- Familiarity with WFPโs mandate and advocacy principles is an advantage.
Language
- Fluency in English required. Knowledge of local languages is an asset.
